Hosted by: David MacKinnon and Michael Hanlon
Location: The Swords And Ploughshares Museum, 7500 Reeve Craig North, Kars, ON
Time/Date: Sat, Jun 1, 2013 · 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM EDT

The Swords and Ploughshares Museum (http://www.calnan.com/swords/), a private military museum in Kars, has graciously offered to let us use their site for a portfolio-building workshop.
The models are donating their time in exchange for photos for their portfolios so this is a TF (Trade for) arrangement. All photographers and models will be required to sign a non-commercial TF release form at the start of the workshop.
For reference, I compiled a photoset of the site (http://dkmackinnon.fotki.com/sites/swords-and-ploughsh/) during a tank girl-themed photoshoot the event organizers did in August (http://www.dkmackinnon.ca/PersonalWorks-2/2012/Tank-Girl/26559404_2VtNKN#!i=2219701485&k=wjPzfsc).
The workshop will proceed as follows:
- up to 10 models will be assigned in pairs over stations around the site. These sites include a set of trenches, a personnel carrier, anti-aircraft gun, ferret, and a military truck.
- up to 18 photographers divided among the stations in groups of at most 3 people. Volunteers will be on hand to ensure safe handling of any equipment at the station. NOTE: We have 13 so I have reduced the number of groups to 5.
- each group will have 45 minutes to capture their images, then photographers and models will each move to a different station
Start time will be 1:00 pm with 1 hour allotted to each station including time to move between stations. Travel light, you will be moving around. Each group will have time to try 4 of the 5 stations.
We are charging photographers 25$ each, all of which (minus expenses) will be donated to the museum. If there is sufficient interest we may try this again at the end of summer, or as a smaller, less structured workshop. Because I have to collect the money on Friday to give to the site owner, there will be no refunds. All payments must be made close of business day on Friday.
If you have military clothing that can be loaned to models, these would be welcome.
Due to the complexity of coordinating site, volunteer and model schedules, there will be no rain date. Long range forecast as of May 30 says possible isolated showers (60% 40%) but temperatures in the mid-to-high 20s (26 degrees forecast). This will be a perfect day for drawing out colours without the sun washing things out.
The event hosts recommend you come prepared for the outdoors: sturdy boots, bug repellent, water containers, and rain gear in case of the occasional shower.
Schedule
11:00 – Any photographers who have confirmed with me that they are willing to help drive models to the site meet at my home/studio at 36 Aldridge Way in Nepean. Currently 6 models are in need of transportation. Send me an email if you are willing to assist.
11:30 – Depart for the site. Travel time from Ottawa is approximately 25 minutes.
12:00 – Site walk, instructions, fitting for models, volunteers placed, model release signed. Photographers who are not assisting in transporting models aim to be on site at this time. If you have military gear that you can bring, please email me before Friday AM. The more variety we have the more different looks we can create.
13:00 – Photo session 1 Start: See team assignments below. Sessions are 45 minutes long with 15 minutes to transition between sets.
14:00 – Photo session 2 Start
15:00 – Photo session 3 Start
16:00 – Photo session 4 Start
17:00 – Site cleanup (1 hour maximum). Any volunteers will to stay to help with cleanup are welcome.
Post-event
All photographers will have a chance to work with all models. I ask that all photographers prepare at least one portfolio-quality image of each model with whom they work and provide a full-resolution image to the model within 2 weeks of the event (June 15th). Additional photos will be welcomed by the models; this is a portfolio-builder workshop and they are donating their time in exchange for unique images for their portfolios.

Just past a “Snow City” sign, turn right onto Reeve Craig. There is no street sign, but the road is just over the 417 from the exit and is the first right. The road is marked as “no exit”. The museum will be obvious on your right from all the military vehicles. Park along the side of the road.
